DBA Spotlight: Being A ‘Master’ Leader

I’m excited to share some more details about the great marketing conference I recently attended. Hosted by Florida International University in Miami, the Digital Branding Analytics Miami 2019 Conference was a fantastic forum filled with great information and fantastic speakers. I received a lot of great tips and tricks that I could put into action right away. In the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing some of the info that these great marketing professionals shared with me. #DBAmiami #FIUMSM

The second speaker to be featured is Joni Fernandez Marmo. Joni was most recently the Senior Vice President of Consumer & Corporate Marketing for Univision Communications, Inc. In that role, she was responsible for the oversight of the Univision Agency, the company’s full-service in-house agency responsible for the creation, production, and execution of all consumer-facing promotional and marketing campaigns and revenue-generating content. Joni’s presentation was one of my favorites as it tackled a topic that is not usually discussed through the lens of marketing – leadership. As a passion point for her, Joni shared that leadership should be fearless at all levels of your career. In 22 years, she went from an intern at Univision to VP of their internal agency. Impressive! She also mentioned that leadership has nothing to do with your actual position. You can be a leader no matter what your title is. Joni asked everyone to be consistent, accountable, and work hard to become masters of their current domain. She also mentioned that failure is perfectly ok but lack of courage is not. No risk, no wins! I was interesting to me when she mentioned that there is no rulebook in the corporate world, and zig-zags are more the norm ….no straight lines. Joni also talked to us about always being the calm in the storm and the one that brings solutions to the table, not problems. That limits your possibilities when you should be abundant in your thinking. Joni added to this by saying that ANY position can be as big or as small as YOU want to make it. Always think BIG, for your team, for your company, and most importantly, FOR YOURSELF! Also, be trustworthy and never compromise your core values, nor compare yourself to others – EVER! Trust in your own abilities and always move forward within your space. She also mentioned something interesting – leadership is like a muscle …it gets stronger the more you flex it. So, if you don’t have the ability to be a leader in your current role, Joni suggests that you go out into the community and lead something for the benefit of society. It will not only benefit you and your resume, but it will also refine your skills to be the best leader that you can be.
