Hosted by Florida International University, the Digital Branding Analytics Miami 2019 Conference was an event not to be missed. The seventh and final speaker I am highlighting is Kathy Mayor. She is the Chief Marketing Officer of Boxycharm, where she is tasked with brand management, creative production, and demand generation while maintaining the company’s “cool factor” via celebrity activations with people like Kim Kardashian, as well as cultural moment activations and joint activations with beauty brands. Drawing from her experience at Carnival, P&G, and McKinsey, she discussed the importance of interrupting marketing patterns by doing the unexpected and leading within your space with imaginative marketing strategies and tactics. I was particularly grateful that during the event, she shared the 7 ways that she leads the charge in these areas within her company. As a marketing person, you don’t often see leaders so high up share the secret to their sauce. To duplicate her success and think like a CMO for your company, Kathy suggests that marketers 1) Interrupt the pattern (do the unexpected) 2) Create comfort (offer guarantees) 3) Change the associations (partner with those that can tell your story) 4) Lead the imagination (creatively push the envelope) 5) Shift the feeling (turn the negative into the positive) 6) Satisfy the critical mind (answer all of the pushback questions) and 7) Take action (think it and do it).
